When it comes to traveling, more specifically air travel, here are few things worse than a long layover. The fact that so many direct lights are being canceled and replaced by indirect flights, some with long layovers in between, is very much a bi-product of how the economy is and how jet fuel prices have skyrocketed. Fortunately, most modern airports are taking steps towards making their facilities more comfortable than they used to be.
The facilities surrounding and supporting the airports are also adapting to passengers’ needs. It’s now easier to find cheap hotels at Heathrow airport, for example, than it used to before. Usually hotels around an airport were more expensive than usual, but now a lot are capitalizing on the traveler that is traveling on a budget. The kind of traveler that, having arrived to the country in a low cost airline, is not looking to stay and enjoy the nearby city but, instead, is simply waiting for a connection flight. I have myself taken advantage of this. Before, if I had a relatively long layover I would just wait it out but now, with hotel prices going down, I find that it’s often worth it to grab a hotel room to have a bit of a rest and a shower.
